Organic Chemistry - Spectroscopy

Complete Structure Determination

This site has been developed to help you gain experience in using spectroscopy to determine the structure of an organic compound using a series of interactive tutorial exercises.

We have made use of the  JSME Molecular Editor. If you are not familiar with this software please check this link for how to use the JSME Editor.

If you are not familiar with our structure determination site, please check this link on how the software and interface works. This page includes one worked example.

Each question will provide you with a Mass spectrum (MS), and Infrared spectrum (IR), a 1H-NMR, and a 13C-NMR. If you need a refresher on these, take the appropriate link.

There are four levels of difficulty, easy medium, hard and very hard with about 20 different compounds in each the data base at present. You can use the following links to access questions directly, or use the link at the bottom of each question. Please note: these exercises make use of JavaScript. For this feature to work properly, you should initially access these questions from the links below. Once you are in a "CSD" question, the previous and next question buttons will function correctly.
